(CNN Español) –– Brazilian President Jair Bolzano was admitted to hospital early Monday morning with a bowel obstruction.
According to the Vila Nova Star Hospital in Sao Paulo, Bolzano is suffering from “intestinal obstruction”. This is the most recent medical issue related to the 2018 incident where Bolzano was stabbed during the election campaign.
Bolzano is “stable”
In a statement, the hospital indicated that the president was stable and receiving treatment and would be reassessed this morning by a panel of Dr. Antonio Luis de Vasconcelos. At present, it is not known when he will be discharged, the official statement said.
Minutes after the news broke, Bolzano released a tweet in which he described how he had begun to feel worse “after lunch on Sunday” and arrived at the hospital at 3:00 a.m. Monday. “I got a nasogastric tube. Additional tests will be done for possible surgery for an internal obstruction in the abdomen,” he wrote.

For its part, the communications secretariat indicated that it had been admitted to hospital due to abdominal discomfort, and that “the president is well and more details will be released later,” the statement said. Brazil Agency, State News Agency.
Agenzia Brazil reported that Bolzano arrived in Sவோo Paulo around 1:30 a.m. after leaving the Forte Marachel Luz in Sவோo Francisco do Sul on the beach in Santa Catarina for the New Year.
Intestinal obstruction problems
President Bolzano was already hospitalized in July 2021, when doctor Antonio Luis Macedo discovered a bowel obstruction. Macedo is the man who operated on Bolzano after he was stabbed in 2018. The president underwent surgery in January 2019 to remove the bag colostomy inserted after the puncture.
“It’s the second hospital admission with the same symptoms, the result of the stabbing (September 6, 2018) and four major surgeries,” Bolzano wrote in a second tweet.
Bolsanaro’s doctor did not expect a new surgery
Macedo, who hopes to return to Brazil early Tuesday morning to examine the president, told CNN Brazil he did not expect to need another operation, but said he needed a stomach test to be sure.

“I’m going to test it. My hypothesis is that based on what I know about the president, there will be no surgery. But I have to evaluate the abdomen to get a definitive result,” Macedo told CNN Brazil.

Bolzano is preparing to run for re-election in October. But opinion polls show that his main rival, former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, has the upper hand.
