The Caribbean Astronomical Society (SAC) has urged people to be vigilant about the sky in the coming weeks so that the Leonard comet can be seen with the naked eye from Puerto Rico.
According to the alliance, December 12, also known as the Comet, will have its closest approach to the planet.
“We can guarantee that it will be visible through binoculars,” said Eddie Irisari, the group’s spokesman, who said in a statement that he had already been able to locate the comet.
“Anyone with a telescope can see it in a week,” he added.
The expert explained that the comet Leonard will be in the sky towards the east for the next few days.
Beginning on December 14th and 15th, it appears at dusk very close to the western horizon and is not far from the brightest planet Venus visible after sunset.
Leonard was approaching Venus from the upper part of the solar system 69.5 million miles from Earth on Wednesday.
The comet was discovered on January 3, 2021 by astronomer GJ Leonard from the Mount Lemon Laboratory in Arizona. Recent studies of its path suggest that the object was close to the interior of our solar system about 80,000 years ago.
Experts predict that Leonard’s path will change, so it will focus on the suburbs of the solar system, so it will not return to that area.
