They captured the former mayor and former councilors of Canchagua who were accused of corruption

Former officials have been accused of embezzling funds earmarked for defense due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The National Civil Police (PNC) arrested in the last few hours several former officials of the Conchagua mayor’s office in La Union, and they will be accused of corruption in the judiciary.

Among those arrested are former Gonzaga mayor Jesus Apelino Medina Flores and Nestor David Barada Hernandez, who served as municipal trustee, according to the first known reports.

At least 5 former councilors have also been caught, but this is yet to be confirmed.

In total, 12 former officers have been arrested and transferred to police headquarters in San Miguel.

All will be charged with crimes of arbitrariness, fraud and dereliction of duty by misappropriating funds meant for the management and attention of the Covid-19 pandemic. For mismanaging funds for some patron saint festivals, in which they brought in a Mexican singer.

The defendants belong to the municipal initiatives of the ARENA and FMLN parties.
