Spending on space initiatives has been on the rise for several years. The increasingly constant launches of agencies such as NASA or ESA show the interest of dozens of countries in space, and although the United States maintains dominance in the sector, China has positioned itself as the second country that spends the most in this heading.

The twenty-first edition of the report «Government Space Programs»(Government Space Programs), carried out by the analysis firm Euroconsult, offers a detailed look at the spending made by countries around the world in the space sector.

According to the report, in 2021 a total of $ 92.4 billion dollars was spent in the space sector, 8 percent above the expenditure reported in 2020. The countries that spend the most are the United States, China, Japan, France, Russia, the Union European, Germany, India and Italy.

How much countries spent in space in 2021

Spending is divided into two main categories, civil or military, and has the United States as the main protagonist, with an expenditure of $ 54.58 billion dollars in 2021.

Of that figure, about half corresponds to the civil sector, with expenses destined to the different NASA missions, although also to support initiatives for commercial flights into space.

The remainder corresponds to expenses for the military sector, with resources destined to agencies such as the Space Force, the Air Force and the Department of Defense.

China, with a spending of $ 10.286 million dollars, ranked as the country that spent the most on space research in 2021, a year in which it scored successes such as the successful arrival of the Tianwen-1 probe on Mars. By 2022, China plans to complete the installation of a space station.
