One hundred years ennobled science

Today the National Observatory’s Astronomy building celebrates a century, defined as one of Havana’s functional constructions conceived for scientific activity.

Havana Cuba. Today the National Observatory’s Astronomy building celebrates a century, defined as one of Havana’s functional constructions conceived for scientific activity.

Luis Enrique Ramos, Coordinator of the History Commission of the Cuban Meteorological Society, details that the benefits of this pavilion included the platform and the dome for the refractor telescope acquired in 1919.

The National Meteorology Award relates that a semi-underground crypt was built in the National Observatory’s Astronomy building to install the high-precision chronometer that marked the counting of time and the official time of the country.

Part of that heritage, Ramos points out, is shared today between two institutions: the telescope was left to the care of the Institute of Geophysics and Astronomy, and the centenary of the building resides in the headquarters of the Institute of Meteorology.
