OKLAHOMA CITY — Oklahoma State Fair visitors will have an opportunity to access free health screenings, preventive wellness resources and educational programs as the Oklahoma State Department of Health brings its Working on Wellness Fest to the fair on Sept. 24.
The free event will run from noon to 7 p.m. inside the Modern Living Building, offering health-focused activities and services for individuals and families. Organizers said the program is designed to make health information and preventive resources more accessible to Oklahomans of all ages.
“Health and wellness can look different for everyone, and the Working on Wellness Fest gives Oklahomans a chance to explore what that looks like for themselves and their families,” said Leslie DeHart, Chronic Disease Coordinator for OSDH. “From free screenings and movement demonstrations to connecting with health resources and hearing inspiring stories from fellow Oklahomans, this event is all about making wellness accessible, engaging and something you can take home with you.”
Free Health Screenings and Mobile Services
Working on Wellness Fest will connect visitors with free health screenings, preventive wellness tools and statewide health networks. The event combines access to health services with demonstrations and personal stories intended to encourage greater awareness of health and wellness.
Mobile health services will also be available at the fair. The Public Health on the Go, or PHOG, unit will be on site alongside the OU Health Mobile Mammography and Lung Cancer Screening buses.
The mobile units will provide fairgoers with convenient access to health-related services and information in one location. Their presence is part of the event’s broader focus on connecting Oklahoma residents with preventive care and statewide health resources.
Attendees will also be able to participate in live movement and active-aging demonstrations. Activities will include Tai Chi and SAIL, which stands for Stay Active and Independent for Life.
The demonstrations will provide participants with practical examples of ways to incorporate physical activity into their routines while highlighting approaches designed to support mobility and independence.
Cancer Survivors to Share Personal Stories
Health education at the event will extend beyond screenings and physical activity. The Working on Wellness Fest main stage will feature Oklahomans sharing personal testimonials about their experiences with serious illnesses.
Speakers will discuss their journeys through prostate cancer and childhood cancer diagnoses, bringing personal perspectives to broader conversations surrounding health awareness and treatment.
Another component of the event will highlight the creativity of young Oklahomans while recognizing pediatric cancer patients.
Youth and young adults from across Oklahoma were invited to participate in a creative competition to design hospital gowns honoring children affected by cancer. Participants who entered the competition will showcase their designs during the wellness event.
Following the event, the creations will be displayed at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa or Children’s Hospital in Oklahoma City, extending the project beyond the State Fair.
The initiative provides young participants with an opportunity to use art to recognize pediatric cancer patients and their experiences while contributing to the event’s wider emphasis on community involvement.
OSDH Expands Public Health Outreach at State Fair
The Working on Wellness Fest is part of the Oklahoma State Department of Health’s efforts to connect residents with health information, preventive services and community resources.
OSDH works to protect and improve public health through a system of local health services and strategies focused on disease prevention. The department provides technical support and guidance to 68 county health departments across Oklahoma.
The agency also provides guidance and consultation to the state’s two independent city-county health departments in Oklahoma City and Tulsa.
By bringing screenings, mobile health services, movement demonstrations and educational programming to the Oklahoma State Fair, the Working on Wellness Fest gives visitors a centralized opportunity to explore resources designed to support healthier lifestyles.
The Sept. 24 event is open to Oklahomans of all ages and will combine practical health services with education, community connections and personal stories throughout the afternoon and evening.
