Franklin County Auditor Warns Homeowners About Fake Property Tax Form Circulating in Viral Video

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Franklin County Auditor’s Office is warning homeowners, particularly older residents, to ignore misleading claims circulating in a viral YouTube video that promotes a nonexistent federal property tax relief program.

According to county officials, the video falsely claims that Congress approved a new federal initiative providing significant property tax savings for senior homeowners. It instructs viewers to contact their local county auditor and request a document called the “Senior Homeowner Tax Review Request,” claiming the form is required under federal law.

The Franklin County Auditor’s Office emphasized that no such federal form, legislation, or property tax stimulus program exists.

The misinformation has led to a surge in inquiries from residents seeking the alleged form. Officials said the office has experienced a noticeable increase in phone calls and emails from homeowners attempting to verify the claims, with some expressing frustration after learning that the information presented in the video is false.

“There is no recently passed federal legislation or federal form called the ‘Senior Homeowner Tax Review Request,’” said Franklin County Auditor Michael Stinziano. “We encourage residents to rely on official government sources and contact our office directly when they have questions about legitimate property tax relief programs.”

AI-Generated Content Raises Concerns Over Online Tax Scams

County officials said the viral video used artificial intelligence alongside misleading commentary to make the false claims appear credible. The Auditor’s Office warned that increasingly sophisticated AI-generated content can make fraudulent information more convincing, increasing the risk that residents may be misled.

Officials advised homeowners to be cautious of online videos, advertisements, or social media posts promising substantial tax reductions, government payments, or debt elimination—especially when they do not direct users to official government websites or recognized public agencies.

The office also cautioned residents against sharing personal or financial information with unofficial websites or third parties promoting the fake program. Homeowners were further advised not to pay anyone claiming they can provide access to the supposed federal application or expedite government tax benefits.

Local officials stressed that legitimate government programs are administered through official channels and that residents should verify any claims directly with their county auditor or other authorized government offices before taking action.

Ohio Offers Legitimate Property Tax Relief Programs

While rejecting the claims made in the viral video, the Franklin County Auditor’s Office reminded homeowners that Ohio does provide several legitimate property tax relief programs established under state law.

Among the most significant is the Homestead Exemption, which offers qualifying property tax relief to eligible homeowners. The program is available to certain Ohio residents who are 65 years of age or older, homeowners who are permanently and totally disabled, qualifying disabled veterans, and certain surviving spouses who meet program requirements.

Officials encouraged eligible homeowners to review the program’s requirements through official county resources if they are unsure whether they qualify.

In addition to the existing Homestead Exemption, Ohio lawmakers recently approved additional tax relief through House Bill 479.

The legislation authorizes a one-time, state-funded property tax reduction for eligible Homestead Exemption recipients beginning in 2027. County officials said the final value of the tax reduction will be determined after county auditors across Ohio certify the total number of eligible recipients statewide.

Current estimates place the benefit at approximately $450 to $500 per qualifying recipient, with the credit expected to appear on first-half property tax bills issued in 2027.

The Auditor’s Office also clarified that homeowners who already receive the Homestead Exemption will not be required to complete a separate application under House Bill 479.

Officials Encourage Residents to Verify Information Before Taking Action

The Franklin County Auditor’s Office is urging homeowners to verify information before responding to claims shared online, particularly those involving taxes, government payments, or financial benefits.

Officials said residents with questions about property tax relief should contact the Auditor’s Office directly or use official county resources to confirm program eligibility and application requirements.

As AI-generated misinformation becomes more common, county leaders say public awareness and reliance on verified government information remain the best defenses against scams and misleading online content. By confirming information through official sources, homeowners can avoid unnecessary confusion, protect their personal information, and ensure they receive any legitimate property tax benefits for which they qualify.
