ASHEVILLE, N.C. — The University of North Carolina Asheville has appointed Dr. Timothy Channell as the inaugural Dean of the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, with the appointment set to take effect on July 1, 2026.

The move marks a significant leadership appointment for the university as it continues a broader academic restructuring aimed at strengthening interdisciplinary education and aligning programmes with evolving workforce and student demands.

Dr. Channell, an experienced academic administrator, higher education consultant, and Professor of Music Business, will lead the newly formed college overseeing a broad portfolio spanning the arts, humanities, social sciences, as well as professional programmes including Business and Education.

University officials said the appointment comes at an important stage in UNC Asheville’s institutional development as it seeks to reinforce its position as a future-focused liberal arts and sciences institution.

“Dr. Channell understands both the enduring value of the liberal arts and the importance of preparing students for a rapidly changing world,” said UNC Asheville Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Yvonne Villanueva-Russell. “His ability to build partnerships, support innovation, and lead collaboratively will be a tremendous asset to UNC Asheville.”

Dr. Channell brings more than 20 years of senior higher education leadership experience to the role. Most recently, he served as Interim Dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Radford University, where he oversaw the transition of five creative departments into the Artis Center for Adaptive Innovation and Creativity, a 178,000-square-foot facility designed to support interdisciplinary learning and creative collaboration.

During his tenure at Radford, Dr. Channell also introduced cross-disciplinary faculty initiatives and implemented recruitment strategies that contributed to a 21 per cent increase in new student enrolment.

His previous leadership positions at Radford University included Assistant Provost for Budget and Academic Operation and Chair of the Department of Music. He also played a role in leading a successful reaffirmation process with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), a major accreditation body in the United States.

Beyond academic administration, Dr. Channell has also been involved in institutional fundraising and advancement initiatives. According to the university, he secured a planned gift valued at $1 million for Radford University’s Music Department and contributed to a wider $43 million capital campaign earlier in his career at West Virginia Wesleyan College.

“I am truly honored and excited to join the UNC Asheville community,” said Dr. Channell. “From my earliest conversations during and throughout the search process, it was clear that UNC Asheville is a place defined by passionate faculty and staff; talented students; meaningful relationships; and a deep commitment to creativity, innovation, and student success.”

Focus on innovation and interdisciplinary education

UNC Asheville said Dr. Channell’s appointment reflects the institution’s emphasis on innovation, collaboration, and regional engagement within higher education.

Among his previous initiatives, Dr. Channell co-led the creation and state approval of the New River Valley Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities, an educational partnership designed to create academic pathways for secondary school students pursuing arts and humanities studies.

The university also highlighted his interest in the ethical and responsible integration of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, into curriculum development and academic planning.

“I believe that the humanities, arts, and social sciences are central to helping students understand the world by engaging thoughtfully with complex challenges and imagining new possibilities for the future,” Dr. Channell added. “At a time when higher education is being asked to innovate and adapt in meaningful ways, our College’s disciplines remain essential in developing creative thinkers and strong communicators.”

Dr. Channell holds a Doctor of Education from Marshall University, a Master of Business Administration from West Virginia Wesleyan College, and a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from Marshall University.

He was also selected as an American Council on Education (ACE) Fellow for the 2022–2023 academic year, a programme widely recognised for developing leadership talent within higher education institutions.

The appointment positions Dr. Channell to play a central role in shaping the strategic direction of UNC Asheville’s newly established college as universities across the sector continue adapting to changing educational, technological, and workforce expectations.
