The Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art is set to open a significant new exhibition examining the work and legacy of Frederick Hammersley, a leading figure in mid-twentieth century abstraction, as cultural institutions continue to invest in programming that broadens public engagement with modern art.
Titled On the Edge: The Abstract World of Frederick Hammersley, the exhibition will run from May 8 through September 6, 2026, at the University of Oklahoma’s Norman campus. The show will explore Hammersley’s transition into abstraction, focusing on his distinctive use of geometry, colour, and intuitive composition.
The exhibition comes at a time when museums are increasingly leveraging historical modernist works to attract diverse audiences and strengthen educational outreach. By presenting more than 45 paintings and drawings from the Hugon Collection, the museum aims to provide both depth and accessibility in its curatorial approach.
Hammersley is widely recognised as a key contributor to the West Coast’s Hard-edge painting movement, a style characterised by sharply defined geometric forms and carefully structured colour relationships. While rooted in precision, his work also introduced an element of playfulness, demonstrating how minimal forms could convey emotion and visual surprise.
His reputation was cemented in 1959 when he was included in the landmark exhibition Four Abstract Classicists, placing him among the most influential abstract artists of his generation. His work has since been regarded as a bridge between strict formalism and more expressive interpretations of abstraction.
Born in Salt Lake City in 1919, Hammersley’s artistic development spanned multiple regions and experiences. He studied in Idaho and Los Angeles before serving in the Second World War, during which he continued his education while stationed in Paris. Upon returning to the United States, he resumed his studies under the GI Bill and later built a teaching career in California and New Mexico. He ultimately settled in Albuquerque, where he remained active as an artist until his death in 2009.
Museum leadership emphasised the exhibition’s role in fostering deeper engagement with abstract art among visitors.

The exhibition is structured around three key series that defined Hammersley’s career: hunch paintings, geometrics, and organics. This grouping reflects the evolution of his practice and highlights the balance between disciplined composition and creative spontaneity.
Curatorial insight has been central to shaping the narrative of the exhibition, particularly through the use of the Hugon Collection, which spans the entirety of the artist’s career.
“What’s wonderful about working with the Hugon Collection is that it spans Hammersley’s entire career, giving us a rare opportunity to follow his creative process into abstraction completely,” said Curatorial Fellow Jonathan Hacker. “Because Hammersley was very aware of what was being created around him, we were able to make connections between his work and works from our permanent collection to explore what made him distinct from other artists at the time.”
In addition to the core exhibition, the museum has developed a supporting programme of events designed to drive visitor participation and extend the commercial and educational impact of the show. These include Spotlight sessions, a curator-led talk, and practical workshops led by a local artist.
Scheduled events include Spotlight: Just My Type on June 6, Hard Edge painting workshops on June 20 and July 25, Fred Talks: Frederick Hammersley on July 18, and Spotlight: Hammer Time on August 8. Such programming reflects a broader institutional strategy to combine exhibition content with interactive experiences, enhancing visitor retention and repeat attendance.
The exhibition is organised by the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art and supported by the Hugon Family alongside contributions from the museum’s endowment donors, underlining the continued importance of private funding in sustaining large-scale cultural initiatives.
Located in the OU Arts District at 555 Elm Avenue, the museum remains a key regional cultural asset, contributing to both academic engagement and tourism activity. With On the Edge, it positions itself at the intersection of scholarship and public accessibility, offering a comprehensive view of an artist whose work continues to resonate within contemporary discussions of abstraction.
