Super Bowl Ticket Costs Highlight Household Spending Comparisons Across Oklahoma

As Super Bowl weekend approaches, new research offers a clear illustration of how the cost of attending the NFL’s flagship event compares with everyday household spending across Oklahoma. The analysis provides a localised view of ticket affordability by translating national pricing into familiar economic terms for residents in the state’s major cities.

The study, produced by The Action Network, uses a national average Super Bowl ticket price of $6,773 to construct a Super Bowl Ticket Burden Index. Rather than focusing solely on the headline price, the index estimates how many work hours or months of common household expenses would be required for a typical household to match the cost of a single ticket.

The findings place the ticket price in the context of income and routine costs such as rent, childcare, utilities, transportation and groceries. While Oklahoma ranks more favourably than many parts of the United States, the analysis shows that attending the Super Bowl would still represent a substantial financial commitment for most households.

Putting Ticket Prices Into Everyday Context

The Super Bowl Ticket Burden Index is designed to offer a practical comparison between discretionary spending on major sporting events and essential household outgoings. By converting ticket prices into work hours and months of spending, the index provides a clearer sense of affordability across different cities.

Across Oklahoma, the results indicate that the cost of attending the game would require the equivalent of several months of typical household expenditure. This approach reflects a broader trend in sports economics, where demand for premium live events continues to drive prices higher, even as household budgets remain under pressure.

Tulsa: Work Hours and Household Expenses Compared

In Tulsa, which ranks 50th out of 301 cities included in the study, a Super Bowl ticket equates to approximately 213 work hours for the average household. When measured against regular expenses, the same ticket is comparable to nearly 5.74 months of rent or childcare costs.

Utilities represent another significant point of comparison. According to the index, the ticket price is equivalent to around 29.34 months of utility spending, illustrating how a one-off discretionary purchase can outweigh multiple years of routine household bills.

Norman: Lower Work Hours, Similar Spending Trade-Offs

Norman places 61st in the national rankings. In the city, the average household would need to work approximately 192 hours to cover the cost of a Super Bowl ticket.

In spending terms, the ticket price corresponds to roughly 5.49 months of rent and 4.27 months of childcare. Utility costs again stand out, with the ticket equalling about 31.36 months of utility spending, reinforcing the scale of the expense relative to everyday household needs.

Oklahoma City: Rent and Utilities in Focus

Oklahoma City ranks 62nd on the index. For households in the state capital, the cost of a Super Bowl ticket is equivalent to around 188 work hours.

The analysis indicates that the ticket price matches approximately 5.82 months of rent and 4.27 months of childcare spending. Utility expenses remain a prominent factor, with the ticket equating to roughly 30.32 months of utility costs. Despite comparatively lower living costs than many large US cities, the figures demonstrate the significant scale of the ticket price in relation to standard household budgets.

Transportation and Grocery Spending Across the State

Beyond housing-related expenses, the index highlights consistent patterns in other spending categories across Oklahoma’s major cities. In Tulsa, Norman and Oklahoma City, the cost of a Super Bowl ticket is equivalent to about 32 months of transportation spending.

Grocery costs show little variation across the three cities. The analysis suggests that a single ticket corresponds to roughly 15.25 months of grocery spending statewide, offering another clear benchmark for understanding the ticket’s financial impact.

A Broader Perspective on Affordability

Overall, the findings suggest that while Oklahoma compares favourably with many US cities in terms of ticket affordability, the cost of attending the Super Bowl still represents months of everyday household spending. For most residents, such an expense would require significant financial trade-offs.

By presenting ticket prices alongside routine household costs, the analysis provides a measured and factual perspective on affordability. It also highlights the widening gap between the price of major live sporting events and the financial realities faced by average households, even in regions with relatively modest living costs.
