Business, economic development and education leaders convened in Durant, Oklahoma, for a regional meeting of the Oklahoma Small Business Development Center (SBDC) West-Central Consortium, focusing on support for small businesses, network performance and coordinated economic development efforts across the region.
The meeting brought together representatives from education providers, chambers of commerce and economic development organisations to review recent activity and discuss priorities designed to strengthen entrepreneurship and business sustainability. Discussions centred on practical support for small firms, data-driven performance reporting and the role of partnerships in extending advisory services to communities throughout Oklahoma.
The session opened with welcoming remarks from Dr. Gayla Lutts, superintendent of Canadian Valley Technology Center, who outlined the importance of education and workforce development in supporting local enterprise. Her comments highlighted the connection between skills training, innovation and business growth within regional economies.
Jim Cowan, President of the Chickasha Chamber of Commerce and Director of the Chickasha Economic Development Council, followed with remarks on the contribution of small businesses to regional economic activity. He emphasised collaboration among chambers, development bodies and advisory networks as a means of creating favourable conditions for business formation and expansion.
An overview of the Oklahoma SBDC’s statewide services was provided by Dana Hugle, Assistant State Director of Performance and Operations. She explained the organisation’s mission to support entrepreneurs through no-cost, confidential business advising, covering areas such as business planning, financial management, marketing and operational improvement. Hugle also outlined how these services are delivered consistently across the state to ensure broad access for business owners.
Oklahoma SBDC State Director Michelle Hockersmith presented updates on network operations and strategic initiatives. Her presentation included information on recent Advocacy Council and Advisory Board activities, ongoing efforts to expand partnerships, participation in America’s SBDC AIU Programme, and collaboration with the U.S. Small Business Administration on manufacturing and onshoring initiatives. She also shared performance indicators used to assess the network’s impact, including measures related to business starts, job creation and long-term viability.
The meeting then turned to examples of client outcomes from within the West-Central Consortium area. Business Advisers Emily Beesley and Angie Lewis highlighted several businesses that have engaged with SBDC services, illustrating different stages of business development and growth. These examples were presented to demonstrate how advisory support can assist businesses in pursuing expansion opportunities, operational improvements and recognition within their respective sectors.
Beesley and Lewis also reviewed performance data for Blaine, Caddo, Canadian, Grady, Kingfisher and Logan counties. The information provided an overview of advisory activity and outcomes at the local level, offering insight into how SBDC services are utilised across multiple communities within the region.
The consortium meeting concluded with a testimonial from Nicole King, owner of Synergy Interiors, an interior design consultation firm specialising in healthcare, corporate and residential spaces. King described her experience working with the Oklahoma SBDC and outlined how advisory services supported the development and growth of her business.
Established in 1984, the Oklahoma SBDC operates as a statewide business consulting network serving entrepreneurs and small business owners. Since its founding, the organisation has assisted more than 150,000 individuals in pursuing business ownership and growth. Services are available to businesses in all 77 Oklahoma counties through a network of more than 20 service locations.
The Oklahoma SBDC is funded in part by the Small Business Administration and supported through partnerships with the Oklahoma Department of Commerce, higher education institutions, technology centres and regional consortia. Through these arrangements, the network aims to contribute to economic development by supporting business start-ups, encouraging job creation and promoting business sustainability.
