The Maxwell Football Club has named College Football Hall of Famer Danny Wuerffel as the recipient of its prestigious Francis “Reds” Bagnell Award, marking a significant recognition of long-term contribution to American football both on and off the field. The award will be formally presented at the 89th Maxwell Awards Gala on Saturday, 14 March 2026, at the Coca-Cola Roxy Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia.

The announcement was made by Maxwell Football Club Executive Director Mark Wolpert, underscoring the organisation’s emphasis on leadership, integrity and service as core values of the sport. The Francis “Reds” Bagnell Award is reserved for individuals whose influence on football extends beyond competitive success, reflecting sustained commitment to the game’s development and its social impact.

Named after Francis Bagnell, a former president of both the Maxwell Football Club and the National Football Foundation, the award carries institutional significance within American football governance. Bagnell’s career was defined by stewardship and advocacy for the sport at national level, principles that the club continues to promote through this annual honour.

Wuerffel’s selection places him among a small group of figures recognised not merely for athletic achievement, but for shaping football’s wider cultural and community role. His career trajectory, combining elite performance, professional longevity and post-playing leadership, aligns closely with the award’s remit.

As a collegiate athlete, Wuerffel built a reputation as one of the most accomplished quarterbacks in the modern era of the sport. Playing for the University of Florida, he led the Gators to four Southeastern Conference championships and delivered the programme’s first national title. Over the course of his college career, he set 17 NCAA and school records, reflecting both consistency and innovation at a time when the college game was undergoing rapid commercial and media expansion.

His on-field success culminated in 1996, when he secured college football’s most prominent individual honours, including the Heisman Trophy, the Maxwell Award and the Campbell Award, recognising him as the nation’s top scholar-athlete. That combination of sporting excellence and academic achievement helped define his public profile and laid the groundwork for his later leadership roles.

Following his collegiate career, Wuerffel was selected by the New Orleans Saints in the 1997 NFL Draft and went on to play for several National Football League franchises. His professional career also included a World Bowl Championship in NFL Europe, highlighting the increasingly international footprint of American football during that period. He retired from professional play in 2004 and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2013.

While his playing career remains significant, it is Wuerffel’s post-retirement work that has drawn sustained attention from football institutions and the non-profit sector. Since 2005, he has lent his name and leadership to the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy, an award that positions community service and social responsibility alongside athletic performance. The trophy has become a prominent fixture in the college football calendar, reinforcing expectations that elite athletes engage constructively with the communities that support the sport.

Through Desire Street Ministries and the Wuerffel Foundation, Wuerffel has continued to apply those principles in practice, focusing on leadership development, service initiatives and community strengthening. His work illustrates how high-profile sports figures can leverage their platforms to deliver long-term social value, a theme increasingly relevant to sports organisations navigating public scrutiny and stakeholder expectations.

The 2026 Maxwell Awards Gala will bring together stakeholders from across the football ecosystem, from high school programmes to the professional ranks. In addition to the Bagnell Award, the evening will feature the presentation of the club’s other national honours, reflecting the sport’s full development pipeline.

Tickets for the gala are now available through the Maxwell Football Club, with the Atlanta event expected to attract senior figures from sport, education and the non-profit community. For the club, the recognition of Danny Wuerffel serves not only as a celebration of an individual career, but as a reaffirmation of football’s broader social purpose at a time when governance, values and community impact remain firmly in focus.
