Oklahoma is set to mark a significant moment in aviation history with a week-long programme of public events commemorating the centennial of the final flight of Bessie Coleman, a pioneering aviator whose legacy continues to influence aerospace education, workforce development, and cultural recognition across the United States.

Bessie Coleman Centennial Week, powered by Gilchrist Aviation Law, Atlantic Aviation (PWA), READY3, Jones Strategies, and the Oklahoma Aerospace Foundation, brings together public institutions, academic partners, and industry stakeholders. The programme is delivered in collaboration with the Oklahoma Department of Aerospace and Aeronautics, the Oklahoma Historical Society, the Oklahoma History Center, and Langston University.

The initiative positions aviation heritage as both a cultural and economic asset, reflecting Oklahoma’s long-standing role in aerospace, defence, and advanced manufacturing. Organisers describe the week as a “pinnacle celebration” of the aviation community, designed to honour Coleman’s achievements while inspiring future generations of pilots, engineers, and aviation professionals.

Coleman, a Langston University alumna, is recognised as the first African-American woman and the first Native American to earn a pilot’s licence. Her achievements, secured at a time of widespread racial and gender discrimination, remain a powerful reference point for diversity and inclusion initiatives across the global aviation sector.

Luncheon at Oklahoma History Center anchors centennial programme

The week formally opens with a Monday luncheon on 26 January 2026 at 11:30am at the Oklahoma History Center in Oklahoma City. Hosted at 800 Nazih Zuhdi Drive, the event brings together policymakers, historians, educators, and business leaders for an in-person fireside chat and networking luncheon.

The gathering is hosted in partnership with Senator Nikki Nice, Senate District 48, alongside the Oklahoma Historical Society. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet Gigi Coleman-Brooms, Bessie Coleman’s great-niece, who will share personal reflections and historical insights into Coleman’s life and career.

Organisers emphasise that the luncheon is intended not only as a commemorative event but also as a professional networking forum, bringing together leaders from education, government, and the aerospace industry. The event programme invites participants to “delve into the life of this aviation pioneer and celebrate her groundbreaking achievements,” while enjoying an informal setting designed to encourage dialogue and collaboration.

Community engagement and education at Metro Tech Spring Lake

Public engagement continues on Wednesday 28 January 2026 with an evening community event at 5:30pm at the Metro Tech Spring Lake Campus Conference Center, located at 1900 Spring Lake Drive, Oklahoma City. The event is open to Langston alumni and the wider public and features a meet-and-greet followed by an informational presentation.

As part of the State of Oklahoma’s Bessie Coleman Centennial Week, the session aligns with the aerospace education programming of the Oklahoma Department of Aerospace and Aeronautics. Gigi Coleman-Brooms will again take part, sharing “heartfelt and inspiring stories” about her iconic ancestor and her lasting influence on aviation.

The presentation explores Coleman’s challenges and triumphs, placing her story within the broader context of workforce access, education, and opportunity. Organisers note that the event is designed to connect history with present-day career pathways, particularly for young people considering futures in science, technology, engineering, and aviation-related fields.

Aviation legacy with modern relevance

Beyond commemoration, the centennial programme reflects the continued economic relevance of aerospace to Oklahoma’s economy. The state remains a hub for aviation services, pilot training, and aerospace manufacturing, with public-private partnerships playing a central role in workforce development.

By linking Coleman’s legacy to contemporary education and industry initiatives, Bessie Coleman Centennial Week underscores how historical milestones can inform modern business priorities. The organisers conclude by inviting the public to “celebrate Bessie’s groundbreaking achievements and honour her legacy, which continues to inspire and uplift aspiring aviators for generations to come,” reinforcing the enduring connection between history, education, and economic growth.
