The Oklahoma Institute for Child Advocacy (OICA) has elected Tulsa business and community figure Axay “Ax” Parekh as President of its Board of Directors for the 2026–2027 term, marking a significant leadership transition for the statewide nonprofit. The move places an eastern Oklahoma representative at the helm for the first time in several years, a development viewed by the organisation as strengthening its reach across the state.

Parekh, well known for his work in real estate, advocacy, and civic engagement, will guide OICA as it intensifies efforts to amplify the needs of Oklahoma’s nearly one million children. The organisation focuses on elevating youth-policy awareness, promoting safety, expanding opportunity, and improving long-term outcomes for children through targeted advocacy and community partnerships.

Leadership announcement and vision for statewide impact

OICA stated that Parekh’s background in community involvement and public-policy engagement made him a strong candidate for the role, particularly at a time when the organisation is preparing for a new cycle of policy initiatives. His leadership is expected to underscore OICA’s commitment to driving informed, collaborative advocacy efforts across both urban and rural areas.

Responding to his election, Parekh said: “It is an honor to serve in this role. Our children deserve a future filled with hope, stability, and opportunity. I encourage everyone to join us in supporting this work.”

His remarks highlight the organisation’s renewed focus on addressing persistent challenges affecting children statewide, including access to education, poverty, mental-health resources, and support systems for vulnerable youth.

Year-end fundraising campaign launched

Parekh’s appointment coincides with OICA’s annual year-end fundraising initiative, a critical effort to support the organisation’s advocacy programmes and operational capacity. He has urged friends, family, and supporters statewide to contribute before the 31 December deadline, emphasising that donations made to the nonprofit are considered charitable contributions and may be declared on tax returns.

OICA depends heavily on donor support to fund research, legislative analysis, youth-policy forums, and community outreach. As Oklahoma prepares for upcoming legislative sessions, the organisation aims to expand its ability to engage policymakers and mobilise stakeholders in shaping evidence-based policy benefiting children.

Additional officers elected to leadership roles

Alongside Parekh, OICA elected several other officers to serve two-year terms on its Board of Directors. The newly appointed leaders include:

  • Rebekka Lucas of Oklahoma City – Vice-President

  • Terry Boehrer of Washington, Oklahoma – Treasurer

  • Samonia Byford of Oklahoma City – Secretary

  • Sandy Foster of Lawton – Governance Chair

  • Amanda Mullins of Norman – Past President

This geographically diverse group is expected to enhance the organisation’s representation and ensure its strategic direction reflects the varied needs of children across Oklahoma.

A pivotal moment for child advocacy in Oklahoma

Parekh’s tenure as board president is anticipated to support OICA’s long-term strategy to improve outcomes for children through strengthened advocacy networks and community investment. His professional and civic background positions him to build on existing initiatives while championing new approaches to statewide engagement.

As Oklahoma continues its efforts to improve child-wellbeing metrics, OICA’s leadership transition signals a renewed commitment to driving reforms, expanding public awareness, and ensuring that the state’s youngest residents have access to the resources and opportunities they deserve.
