The City of Stroud, Oklahoma, has begun a multi-million-dollar runway expansion project at its municipal airport, marking a significant step towards enhancing aviation safety, infrastructure, and local economic development. A groundbreaking ceremony was held in September 2025 to commemorate the start of the works, led jointly by the Oklahoma Department of Aerospace and Aeronautics (ODAA) and Stroud Municipal Airport officials.
Runway to Be Widened and Extended to Meet Federal Safety Standards
The development will see the airport’s main Runway 18/36 both widened and extended to meet updated federal safety standards and to accommodate a greater range of aircraft. Under the plans, the runway will increase in width from 60 to 75 feet and its length from 3,000 to 4,000 feet. The existing runway surface will also undergo a full rehabilitation as part of the modernisation scheme.
Part of Oklahoma’s Airport Construction Programme
The improvements form part of the ODAA’s wider Airport Construction Programme (ACP), a five-year revolving plan designed to strengthen Oklahoma’s aviation infrastructure in collaboration with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and local airport sponsors. The initiative aims to ensure a network of airports across the state that can effectively support business, transportation, and commerce requirements.
Upgrades Include LED Lighting and Modern Pilot Guidance Systems
In addition to the runway expansion, the Stroud project will include the installation of new energy-efficient LED runway lighting and Precision Approach Path Indicators (PAPIs). These navigational aids are expected to significantly improve pilot guidance and aircraft trajectory on approach, enhancing safety during take-offs and landings, particularly in low-visibility conditions.
$6.7 Million Project Funded by State, Federal and Local Partners
According to project documentation, the total cost of the runway and lighting enhancements is estimated at around $6.7 million. The ODAA will contribute approximately $3.6 million to the works, with a further $3 million coming from the FAA. The City of Stroud, as the local airport sponsor, will provide an additional $115,000. The multi-agency funding structure reflects the project’s strategic importance for the region’s aviation infrastructure and its alignment with both state and federal development priorities.

The expansion is viewed locally as an economic catalyst, opening the way for larger aircraft to access Stroud and improving the town’s connectivity to wider state and national aviation networks. Enhanced facilities are also expected to attract more business and recreational traffic, supporting growth in aviation-related services and regional commerce.
Historic Airport Continues to Evolve
Stroud Municipal Airport, which currently occupies approximately 180 acres, traces its history back to the early years of American civil aviation. The site originated in 1931 as part of a Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) project, when 90 acres were leased to serve as an emergency landing field for military pilots during training flights. In 1943, the airport’s operations were transferred to the City of Stroud, which has since overseen steady expansion and development of the facility.
Today, the airport is home to 16 based aircraft and records an average of 3,600 take-offs and landings annually. The forthcoming runway expansion is expected to further increase capacity and operational flexibility, enabling the airport to accommodate a broader mix of aircraft types and flight purposes.

For the ODAA, the Stroud project exemplifies its broader commitment to maintaining a safe and efficient network of regional airports that underpin economic development throughout Oklahoma.
