Castellón renews its title of “City of Science and Innovation” until 2028

Mayor of Castellon, Begonia Carrascoannounced that the City Council of Castellon has received the renewal of the distinction 'City of Science and Innovation“, granted by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities.

“This distinction is given to cities that distinguish themselves in supporting innovation in their territory, defining policies, and promoting local structures, institutions and companies with a strong scientific, technological and innovative component,” Carrasco explained. “It is therefore a recognition of the work carried out by the city council, but also by other institutions or companies in the city, in favor of innovation. In this case, this first renewal covers the period 2025-2028, and at the same time forms part of the network of science and innovation cities known as Enpulso Network“

For the first mayor, this is a recognition that “concerns the entire community of Castellón, setting examples ranging from companies to academic institutions such as Jaume I University“And parks, technological institutes or the administration itself.”

“We have a city and a province where technology, science and research have always played a decisive role in its progress. As clear examples, we only have to look at our ceramics sector or the activity of industrial activity centres such as Polegono del Serrallo where many leading multinational companies are headquartered.”

Carrasco also did not want to forget that “we work decisively alongside a strategic sector such as technology, and with associations such as Zarksaticwhich brings together a large number of companies and professionals. A key sector in creating stable and high-quality jobs, which is what we are committed to from the City Council and is essential to put Castellón on the innovation map, so that talent can stay at home and attract more companies to our city.”

The mayor also wanted to include in this commitment to innovation “the aspects related to sustainability, achieving an accessible city, with improved mobility and public services. A city connected to the future and closer to its neighbors through new e-government projects.”

Carrasco insisted that “from the Castellón City Council, we promote events such as the Castellón City Programmers Meeting. Hackathon Or the Kids Hackathonwhich we want to turn into the largest in Spain in its category, strengthening the innovative ecosystem.

Economic impact

The first mayor wanted to highlight “the importance of companies in the technology and innovation sector, which represent more than 22,000 employees in our province and have a turnover of 3.5 billion euros, so from the capital we can only strengthen the rules and commitment to a city where science and innovation are increasingly present”.

He also referred to municipal initiatives “that relate to training and the promotion of science and innovation applied to the environment of our city” such as the “Entrepreneurial Talents” awards in collaboration with the Universidad Jaume I, in which students from all over the world participate. Countries participate throughout the ages and their goal is to design innovative initiatives in line with the future challenges of our city.

Begoña Carrasco also mentioned “other actions taken by the Castellón City Council to spread digitalization and innovation in the city, such as organizing conferences such as Internet Day or training courses on the use of computers and new technologies for the elderly, making technology closer to the entire population.”
