Born in 1944, Gutierrez was part of the Communist Party and the Liberation Forces (FAL), one of the five organizations that formed the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN). A native of Salzuaba, Santa Ana, he had a career in student movements such as the General Union of University Students (AGEUS) at the University of El Salvador (UES) until he joined the FAL in the late 70s.

Gutierrez, known by the nickname Logan in the ranks of the FAL, became a guerrilla commander, participating in and signing peace accords with the government of Alfredo Cristiani in Mexico City in January 1992.

Once in peace, Gutiérrez was deputy of the FMLN in the 1994-1997 legislature. Later, he was part of the Revolutionary Tendency, a group within the Left Party.

In the following years, Gutiérrez worked as a political analyst, with sharp, critical thinking and a peculiar way of analyzing and expressing himself in the various sociopolitical contexts of the national reality.

He also served as an educator and vice chancellor at Lutheran University.

At the time of writing, it is not known where Gutierrez's funeral will be held.
