(CNN) — One of India's largest airlines has just launched a new option that allows female passengers to see where other women are sitting when choosing seats for their flights.

According to a statement sent to CNN, low-cost carrier IndiGo Airlines is offering female travelers who check in online an experiential benefit for their flights.

The airline, founded in 2006, operates more than 2,000 domestic and international flights daily in India.

In the statement, IndiGo said the feature, which will be available to women traveling alone or who are part of a family booking, is in the spirit of '#GirlPower'.

“IndiGo is proud to announce the introduction of a new feature aimed at making the travel experience more convenient for our passengers,” the airline said.

“We are committed to providing an unparalleled travel experience for all of our travelers, and this new feature is just one of the many steps we are taking to achieve that goal.”

CNN has reached out to IndiGo for more information about the launch of the new feature.

Although the airline did not specify a reason for giving women the option to see where other women are seated, assaults against women and children are regularly reported on commercial flights around the world.

In the United States, crimes committed on board aircraft fall under the jurisdiction of the FBI. In a report issued last April to raise awareness about sexual assault on airplanes, the FBI said that 96 cases of sexual assault on board flights were recorded during 2023.

“Sexual assault on board, which often takes the form of unwanted touching, is a serious offense that can land perpetrators in prison,” the report says.

“Men are usually the perpetrators and women and unaccompanied minors are the victims,” he adds.

CNN's Manveena Suri contributed to this report.
