As part of an activity commemorating the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, a group of teenage girls and boys had the opportunity to participate in a field trip organized by the Specialized Protection Service for Children and Adolescents and the Chilean Antarctic Institute (INACH), offering them a unique experience to explore and better understand scientific work in this very difficult region. .

Accompanied by marine biologists and professionals from the INACh Educational Area, Jessica Paredes and Constanza Jiménez, the participants had the opportunity to observe marine invertebrates and birds in Chapunco Park, located 15 kilometers from Punta Arenas. These species benefit from low tides and feed early on the coast of the Strait of Magellan. In addition, they were introduced to the methodology used by these scientists to study species found in the far south of the country and in Antarctica, and made recommendations of different types to bring participants closer to science.

“We are trying to do our part to encourage science in Antarctica among girls and teenagers. It is clear that there is a large gender gap in the scientific field and that programs like this are essential to stimulate girls’ curiosity towards science and open pathways in these fields,” said Constanza Jiménez.

The purpose of this activity was to encourage girls' interest in STEM, and give them a first-hand look at professional and personal development opportunities in these fields. By enhancing their curiosity, observation and analytical skills, as well as their experimental spirit from an early age, new generations are expected to promote the advancement of scientific knowledge, and overcome any gender disparity.
