Teofimo Lopez successfully, but sluggishly, defended his World Boxing Organization super lightweight title against Jaime Ortiz.
LAS VEGAS — Diofimo Lopez took to the ring with a sword eater and other circus acts as he belted out Hugh Jackman's “The Greatest Showman,” complete with hat and ringmaster's robes.
He did almost nothing in an uneventful super lightweight title defense against Jamine Ortiz, a unanimous decision victory for Lopez that drew constant cheers from the Mandalay Bay crowd.
Lopez (20-1, 13 KOs) won by scores of 117-111, 115-113 and 115-113. Although he retained his WBO title at 140 pounds, he failed to put on a show and was once again frustrated by a talented southpaw.
“I think I won the fight,” said Lopez, ESPN's No. 1 junior welterweight. “What can I say? Once again I came out with the short end of the stick. He couldn't hit me. He didn't take any shots at me.”
