Ryan Gosling questions why the Oscars didn't nominate Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig. This is what he said

(CNN) — Ryan Gosling is grateful for his Oscar nomination, but he's joined a chorus of people questioning the omission of co-star Margot Robbie and director Greta Gerwig in their respective individual categories.

Gosling was nominated in the supporting actor category on Tuesday for his portrayal of Mattel's Ken doll in “Barbie,” opposite the Barbie star of last year's top-grossing film Robbie.

Her nomination counts as one of eight the film received, but the nominations have continued unabated since director Gerwig and Robbie failed to receive individual nominations in the director and lead actress categories, respectively. (“Barbie” is produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, which, like CNN, owns Warner Bros. Discovery).

Although Gerwig and Robbie were not recognized individually, each received Oscars this week. Gerwig was recognized in the adapted screenplay category with her “Barbie” co-writer (and husband) Noah Baumbach, and Robbie was nominated for producer with a best picture nomination along with three others.

In his statement, Gosling also paid tribute to his co-star America Ferrera, who received a surprise supporting actress nomination for her performance in the film.

This is Gosling's full statement to CNN:

“I feel so honored to be nominated by my peers in a year of so many great movies with such remarkable artists. I never thought I'd say this, but I feel incredibly proud and honored to have played a plastic doll. Ken

But there's no Ken without Barbie, and no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for the film making history and celebrated around the world.

Without his talent, direction and genius, no one in the film gets credit.

To say I'm disappointed they weren't nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement.

Against all odds, except for a pair of soulless, scantily clad, and thankfully crotchless puppets, they made us laugh, broke our hearts, inspired culture, and made history. Your work and the work of other eligible nominees must be approved.

I'm so happy for America Ferrera and the other incredible artists who contributed their talents to make this such an amazing movie.
