Russian politician Alexei Navalny was sentenced to life in prison in a Moscow court on Tuesday, February 2.

Update 23.18 German Chancellor Angela Merkel also demanded the release of Alexei Navalny.

Update 20.05 The United States and the United Kingdom have demanded the immediate and unconditional release of Alexei Navalny following a Moscow court ruling. Voluntary charities coordinated by Alexei Navalny are calling for protests. Hundreds of law enforcement officers were mobilized in central Moscow. The Okotny Riyadh metro station in the center of the Russian capital has been closed.

Initial message:

Navalny was arrested on January 17 when he landed at a Moscow airport and was charged with failing to comply with the terms of his parole.

Authorities in Moscow, meanwhile, added “incitement to protest” to the charges and sentenced him to 3.5 years in prison on Tuesday.

The judges also decided that judges should serve their sentences in conjunction with common law prisoners.

Since he was already under house arrest for 9 months, he will be jailed for 2 years and 8 months.

In the courtroom, he said to his wife Yulia, “Don’t be sad, everything will be fine!” Was able to address only the words, according to an image published on the Telegram Moscow channel.

On Tuesday morning, Russian police began arresting people who had gathered in front of the court where the sentence was to be pronounced.

Massive protests have taken place in Russia in recent weeks, attended by hundreds of Russian citizens, condemning the dictatorial behavior of President Vladimir Putin, demanding the release of Navalny.

With more than 4,500 people arrested on Sunday, January 31 alone, EU and US diplomats have taken a stand against the brutality with which protests have been suppressed. Russian officials responded by calling the United States “total intervention” in domestic affairs.
