With a talk this morning at IES Garcías Pavón, the activity within the Science City project promoted by the Supreme Council for Scientific Research comes to an end this year in 58 cities across Spain, including Tomelloso. This was through a workshop called “Meteolab”, which is a very practical workshop in which first-year ESO and second-year Baccalaureate students participated. This is a scientific dissemination activity developed at the Complutense University of Madrid to bring meteorology and climate science closer to students through two experiments related to ocean pressures and currents, and from there linking them to the current climate crisis. Elena Calvo and Sofía Fernández, researchers from the Institute of Geosciences (CSIC-UCM) and the Faculty of Physics of the Complutense University of Madrid, developed this workshop. The education consultant and teacher of this center, Antonio Calvo, welcomed them to Tomelloso and thanked them for sharing their knowledge with the students to bring them closer to meteorology and climate science in a practical and accessible way.

Sofia Fernandes has a degree in Physics and a Master’s degree in Meteorology and Geophysics. She is currently a researcher at the Institute of Geosciences, a joint center between the Supreme Council for Scientific Research and the Complutense University of Madrid. For her part, Elena Calvo studied physics at the University of Oviedo and later completed a master’s degree in meteorology and geophysics at the Complutense University of Madrid. She is currently pursuing a PhD in climate variability and is attached to the Institute of Geosciences.

The City Council’s Economic Promotion Department is already working with educational centers on the most interesting proposals that might come to Tomelloso next year under this programme. January will start with an activity related to the exciting sport of chess.
