(CNN Spanish) — Tropical Cyclone Norma Strengthened This Thursday morning, a category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale, Mexico’s National Meteorological Service (SMN) reported on its X account, earlier on Twitter.
According to Upgrade At 11:00 a.m. SMN, the hurricane made landfall this morning about 355 kilometers southwest of Playa Perula in the western Mexican state of Jalisco. The maximum sustained winds are 215 km/h with gusts of 260 km/h.
If its track continues, the hurricane could make landfall in Cabo San Lucas, in the northwestern state of Baja California Sur, over the weekend, according to officials. Flooding and high tides are also possible, they warn.
According to the update, the weather to expect is:
- Jalisco and Colima will experience occasional heavy rains.
- Very heavy rainfall in Nayarit, Michoacán and Guerrero.
- Due to the rains, the water levels of rivers and streams in those states may rise, causing landslides and floods.
- Increased chance of rain over Baja California Sur and Sinaloa.
- Wind gusts of 90 to 110 km/h and waves of 3 to 5 meters are possible along the coasts of Jalisco, Colima and Michoacán.
- Baja California Sur, Nayarit and Guerrero beaches with winds of 60 to 80 km/h and waves 2 to 3 meters high.
