TORONTO — Whit Merrifield hit a clutch single in the 13th inning and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Boston Red Sox 4-3 on Saturday.

Merrifield’s infield single by Mauricio Lovera (1-3) drove in Vladimir Guerrero Jr. from third base.

Chad Green (3-0) pitched one inning for the win.

Dominican Guerrero hit a home run and reached base five times for Toronto, which kept it from losing ground in the fight for wild-card tickets to the American League postseason. The Blue Jays began the day a half-game behind third- and final-place Seattle.

Guerrero went 2-for-3 with three walks, one intentional.

Dominican Rafael Devers hit a two-run home run to hit his 32nd home run. But Boston lost for the ninth time in 11 games.

For the Red Sox, Venezuelan Willier Abreu went 1-for-2 with a run. Dominicans Rafael Devers went 1-4 with a run scored and two RBIs, while Pablo Reyes was 1-1 with an RBI. Mexico’s Alex Vertugo made it 0-5 with one goal. Mexican Luis Urias is 3-0.

For the Blue Jays, Dominican Guerrero scored two runs in a 3-2 victory and one RBI, Santiago Espinal 5-1. Mexico’s Alejandro Kirk is 4-1.
