Tropical Depression Number 10: Warning for Heavy Rain

The Cuban Meteorological Center has issued an emergency statement that tropical depression number 10 has formed in the Caribbean. According to the latest data, tropical depression number 10 was located at 21.1 degrees north latitude and 86.1 degrees west longitude at 5 pm. It is located 105 kilometers northeast of Cozumel and 145 kilometers west-southwest of Cabo de San Antonio in the province of Pinar del Rio.

A tropical depression has a maximum wind speed of 45 kilometers per hour, high winds, a central pressure of 1006 hPa and they are almost constant. Rain and thunderstorms associated with this system spread over the northwestern Caribbean Sea, the Yucatan Channel, and western Cuba.

This tropical depression has undergone rapid development during the last 12 to 24 hours and is remarkably organized. Currently, showers and thunderstorms are expected over the northwestern Caribbean Sea, the Yucatan Channel, and the western tip of Cuba.

Weather conditions continue to be favorable for rainfall across the national territory. Since early morning, it has been raining continuously on the western tip of Pinar del Rio and on Isla de la Juventud. The rain is expected to intensify over other parts of the western region throughout the day.

The network of rain gauges of the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (INRH) has recorded significant figures in the last 24 hours. The Carapachibey lighthouse on Isla de la Juventud recorded 101.0 millimeters of rain, while the Playa Girón weather station in Matanzas recorded 93.1 millimeters. A total of 102.2 millimeters of rain was recorded in the town of Manuel Laso, municipality of Santino, Pinar del Rio province.

The probability of rain is forecast to remain high over most of the national territory throughout the weekend, and some of these showers are expected to be heavy and intense in certain areas.

Rainfall is expected to increase on Monday the 28th and Tuesday the 29th, especially in western Cuba. The provinces of Pinar del Río, Artemisa and Isla de la Juventud special municipality are expected to receive between 100 and 350 millimeters of rain in the next 72 hours.

It is recommended to follow the updates and warnings issued by the Cuban Meteorological Agency and take the necessary precautions to guarantee safety in these adverse weather conditions.
