The US Army is investing $94 million in nanoplanes

Teledyne FLIR Defense has been selected by the US Army to supply the Black Hornet® 3 systems in a contract worth $93.9 million.

The five-year IDIQ contract, which was awarded to Teledyne FLIR Defense, includes the delivery of Black Hornet 3 unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), as well as control units, spare parts and training.

Since 2018, as part of the Soldier Borne Sensor (SBS) program, the Army has procured these devices, exceeding $125 million in total orders for the multifunctional drone.

The Black Hornet PRS weighs 33 grams and has a flight range of up to 25 minutesIt transmits live and still images in high definition, making it essential for operations in conflict zones.

Global use of Black Hornet drones

These UAVs are currently being used by Ukrainian forces thanks to British and Norwegian donations. Norway recently ordered 1,000 more unmanned aircraft systems.

With success in a multitude of missions and adverse contexts, FLIR Defense has delivered more than 20,000 Black Hornet PRS systems to more than 40 countries.

FLIR Vice President of Defense Dr. Jehfen Lee highlighted Black Hornet 3’s ability to provide accurate information to soldiers on missions.

Li noted that the company will continue to invest in the development of unmanned technologies and smart sensors.

These technologies are revolutionizing the dynamics of contemporary battlefields.
