San Salvador. Puerto Rican goalkeeper Jean Pizarro won the gold medal in the combined individual event at the San Salvador 2023 Games this Friday.

It was Puerto Rico’s twenty-first gold medal at the Games, one more than Barranquilla achieved in 2018.

“It’s #21, like Clemente, and I’m very happy that it put me down in history,” Pizarro said.

The final took place in the afternoon with little wind, in contrast to the morning, and Pizarro won 148-144 against Colombian Jagdeep Singh Mejia, opening the match with three perfect rounds and holding the pulse in the last two. A round of arrows, when he was already looking closely at the gold in his mind.

“In the middle of the game, with the advantage we had (60-56) I wanted to focus on the right thing. I couldn’t give up. But at the end my chest started shaking because I had already visualized the gold medal and I had a lot of pressure,” Pizarro described.

Pizarro advanced to the finals with a 146-145 win over Mexico’s Miguel Becerra in the morning and without the wind. They were tied 117-117 heading into the fifth and final round of arrows. In that decisive round, Pizarro’s first two arrows were 10’s and Becerra’s two arrows were 9’s. The Puerto Rican sealed the pass with a 9 on his last arrow.

Now he will hear La Ponrigena for the first time in the Central American and Caribbean games. He will hear it in the presence of his girlfriend, Colombian archer Sarah Lopez, his mother, Puerto Rico’s representative Maria Latorre, and his athletes, who are here because Pizarro is president. It is a special award for a sportsman-leader.

“Since Mayaguez 2010, I have caught many songs, which did not happen to me in other Central American Games (Veracruz 2015 and Barranquilla 2018). I have worked hard for this. We had to go to the World Cup stages to get this. I am very happy,” he said.

On the other hand, Ramirez fell 146-143 in the bronze medal match against Sara Lopez of Colombia.

Ramirez tied the third round of the Arrows 87-87 with Dafne Quintero in the semifinals. A fourth difference. The Puerto Rican shot 8, 9, and 10 to lead the fifth and final round with a 117-115 disadvantage. That’s the edge the Colombian needs.

And Pizarro-Ramirez lost in mixed doubles in competitions After tying the game 155-155, an arrow against El Salvador for the bronze medal.
