Data from the Spanish Refugee Assistance Commission’s (CEAR) annual report published this week show that more than half of all asylum applications in European Union (EU) countries fail, as six out of 10 applications for asylum are rejected by the authorities.

According to press reports, Spain is lagging far behind the EU countries that have received the most requests to help migrants from their own countries based on this practice, despite being the third country in the group. year. Only Spain is ahead of countries like Malta or Cyprus.

In 2022, more than 118 thousand people applied for asylum in Spain, which Estrella Callan, general director of CEAR, described as unrealistic and sweet, because they did not count the thousands of migrants who could not access the computer to request at least one appointment. How to apply for asylum in Spain?

They explain that currently, the average time for a pre-asylum request in Spain is about six months, and there are more than 70,000 people who cannot access this international protection.

“It is urgent to increase availability and expedite allotment of nominations. Registration should be immediate and not exceed 3-6 days”, He pointed out Elena Muñoz, CEAR State Legal Coordinator.

Spain is the third country in the EU, after Germany and France, to receive the most asylum requests in 2022, although it is one of the countries that offers the least protection. In recent years, it has also been an option for some Cuban immigrants in the country illegally.

According to this study, most migrants seeking asylum in Spain are Latin Americans, and 7 out of 10 arrive in the country by air on a short-term or study visa and seek asylum. Venezuela is the leading country (38.5% of formalized applications), followed by Colombia, Peru, Morocco and Honduras.
