(CNN) — Continued a Mass layoffs of Twitter employees Confused CEO Elon Musk summoned the company’s software engineers to his San Francisco headquarters for an emergency Friday afternoon meeting.
“Anyone who can actually write software, please report to the 10th floor today at 2 p.m.,” Musk wrote in an email to employees obtained by CNN.
“If you work remotely, please email the request below and I’ll try to talk to you via video. The only exceptions are those who cannot physically travel to Twitter headquarters or have a family emergency,” Musk wrote in a subsequent email. “These will be short technical interviews that will give me a better understanding of Twitter’s technology stack.”
After Thursday’s 5 p.m. ET deadline, dozens of employees rejected his ultimatum to work “very hard” rather than leave the company in what one former executive described as an “expulsion.”
The office summons marked an apparent reversal of the company’s decision to temporarily close its offices until Monday.
On Thursday night, after the employees decided to leave the company, an email was sent to the employees who remained at the company saying that the company’s offices would be temporarily closed and access to credentials would be restricted until Monday. Email obtained by CNN.
Musk’s team similarly closed offices during mass layoffs earlier this month due to security concerns and the apparent fear that departing employees might try to sabotage the company by leaving.
