Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has reported that at least 1,186 people have died and 4,896 have been injured in floods in Pakistan since June 14, 2022.
NDMA says 416 children died during that period.
In the 24 hours from Wednesday to Thursday, 19 people died and 1,256 were injured.
Overall, the number of injuries since June 14 rose to 3,641, with 87 new injuries in the last 24 hours, according to the NDMA.
Additionally, more than 69,000 houses have been partially or fully destroyed in the last 24 hours, and more than 1.1 million houses have been partially or fully damaged since June 14, the NDMA said. Most of these are in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh provinces.
This Wednesday, Pakistani Prime Minister Shebaz Sharif thanked his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi in a tweet for his “condolences over the human and material losses caused by the floods”.
“With their characteristic resilience, the people of Pakistan will, Inshallah, overcome the adverse effects of this natural calamity and rebuild their lives and communities,” Sharif added.
Apple CEO Tim Cook tweeted his condolences to the victims, adding that the tech giant would donate to relief and recovery efforts on the ground, without specifying an amount.
On Wednesday, Pakistani Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, ambassadors of more than 20 countries and representatives of international organizations visited the flood-affected areas of Sindh, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan’s foreign ministry said.
According to Pakistan’s foreign ministry, Zardari briefed diplomats and representatives of international organizations on the enormity of the ongoing tragedy.
