Students from the region are part of a youth science workshop

A total of 20 high school students from Baja California and San Luis Rio Colorado, Sonora, are participating in the 20th edition of the Youth Science Workshop, organized by Cicese, UABC and UNAM.
Horacio de la Cueva, Cicese researcher and member of the organizing committee, confirmed that the workshop seeks to awaken the scientific careers of high school students through the experience of direct cooperation with specialists from the three participating institutions.
He stated that from June 27 to July 3, those selected will have access to specialized equipment and laboratories at Cicese, UABC, the Institute of Astronomy and the Center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (Cnyn) at UNAM.
He then announced that some of the areas of knowledge to be explored at the workshop, which will resume this year after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic caused by Covid-19, are astrobiology, marine ecology, physics, geology, biology and chemistry. .
“Science gives us satisfaction and gives us friends and colleagues for life, and we know that former workshop members keep communicating, they keep talking, and they keep being friends,” he commented.
For her part, Monica Lacafix-Perumene, Vice President of the Ensenada UABC Campus, invited the group of students to give themselves a chance to get to know more closely and to find and awaken the world within them.

For Fernando Rojas Inigues, Director of Cnyn, the workshop will introduce those who share a life experience and idea very close to the work done by people dedicated to science.
While Mauricio Reyes Ruiz, President of the National Astronomical Observatory (OAN), emphasized that scientific knowledge is the basis of equitable and sustainable development, both nationally and internationally.
“The fact that you are encouraged to worry about this kind of thing, training, which you do by coming here with us, gives us great happiness and at OAN and the rest of the institutions, we are very happy,” he said.
