In Varadero, the science for sustainable and inclusive tourism (+ video)

Varadero-. Elba Rosa Pérez Montoya, Cuban Minister of Science, Technology and Environment, highlighted today that tourism is not only an income-generating sector, but that it is essential for defining the guiding principles for a sustainable and resilient future.

During the Sustainable Tourism event, which is being held at the Iberostar Selection Varadero in the presence of Manuel Marrero Cruz, Prime Minister of Cuba, Perez Montoya spoke about the Life Task for sustainable and inclusive tourism.

Looking to the future, he said, the growth of the sector provides opportunities for adaptation and mitigation, and for the implementation of nature-based solutions, with a cross-sectional perspective that takes into account the entire service production chain.

On the current situation of the global environment and its repercussions in the largest of the Antilles, turning crises into opportunities, and considering the recommendations for the transition to a green economy in due course, the minister explained.

He stressed that in Cuba there is an understanding of the issue by national authorities, and argued for measures in the transition to sustainability, including elimination by demolishing permanent buildings on sand dunes.

During the day, the 2020 National Environmental Awards were presented to the Melia Las Americas and Royalton Hicacos hotels, in Varadero, and the Tier 1 Ecotourism category was awarded to the Segundo Frente, in Santiago de Cuba.

With the theme of Tourism for All Generations, Monday’s program also includes presentations on topics such as the Association of Caribbean Nations’ commitment to promoting sustainable tourism in the greater Caribbean, climate change and hurricanes.

In a panel discussion, respected voices from tourism and science will share knowledge on aspects such as beach maintenance, conservation and rehabilitation in Cuba, comprehensive waste management, Cuba’s underground, and coral reef cultivation.
