LONDON, February 24 (EFE): The United Kingdom on Thursday ordered its airlines to avoid Ukrainian airspace “to keep passengers and crew safe,” British Transport Secretary Grant Shapps announced.
“Following the horrific events that occurred tonight in Ukraine, I have instructed the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to make airlines avoid Ukrainian airspace to keep passengers and crew safe,” Shapps said in a Twitter message.
The minister stressed that his government “continues to stand by the Ukrainian people and is working with our international partners to respond to this act of aggression.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will chair an emergency Cabinet meeting (COBRA) from 07:30 GMT, when he is expected to adopt new sanctions against Russia and other measures.
Today, Russia has launched a military operation against Ukraine, with the purported aim of pacifying the armed conflict that has been taking place in eastern Ukraine since 2014. EFE
