(CNN) –– One Earthquake A magnitude 6.2 earthquake off the coast of northern California shook much of the state after noon, according to data. American Geological Survey (USGS).
The quake struck off the coast of Cape Mendocino near Humboldt County. There are reports of people realizing this as far as San Francisco and Chico in California.
“It was slow at first, but then it really felt,” Humboldt County Sheriff William Honzel told CNN. We have not had such an earthquake since 2010.
California’s Earthquake Early Warning System worked for those who registered for alerts on their mobile devices. Honzel estimates he received an earthquake 10 to 15 seconds before the quake began in California.
Humboldt County Emergency Services is currently assessing the damage. But there were no reports of injuries or disasters. Some minor damage to the buildings, including broken glass, has been found so far, Honzel said.
The company tweeted that the California Emergency Services Office is “actively monitoring” and “working closely with its local counterparts in the region to protect communities from any secondary impacts.”
Humboldt County is sparsely populated, with approximately 135,000 inhabitants covering an area of approximately 10,300 square kilometers. The area is located near the California-Oregon border, 434 kilometers north of San Francisco.
Several aftershocks were detected after the initial quake, but no tsunami was expected at this time, the sheriff’s office said.
