The elimination of the Argentine Boca Juniors in the 16th round of the Copa Libertadores by Brazilian Atletico Miniro ended in a common battle involving the public in the dressing rooms of the Minerva Stadium in Belo Horizonte.

The scandal erupted after goalless draws in the first and second quarters and Libertadores securing their place in the quarterfinals, after Minori Boca were penalized 3-1.

As in the case in Buenos Aires, after the referee consulted the VAR, the Argentine club’s players, who were opposed to removing a goal that could qualify for the quarterfinals, began to further provoke the Brazilian team into access to the field.

Atletico Mineiro not only attacked leaders and players and members of the security team, but also threw water bottles at their rivals and smashed security stations, a loudspeaker and other items.

The chaos was supposed to have been caused by militarized police using gas to disperse soldiers, even insulting some members of the Argentine delegation.

Police have threatened to detain two of Boca Juniors players in Brazil and have demanded pictures from security cameras to try to identify others who caused the chaos.

Although police promised to take the Argentine club bus to the airport, some members of the Boca Juniors Technical Commission said they would stay in Belo Horizonte until all members of the delegation were released.

Some images aired on Brazilian TV show striker Sebastian Villa can be seen blowing up the water distributor, while in other guards Marcos Rojo and Carlos Esquerdos can be seen attacking a member of the stadium’s security team.

Members of Atletico Miniro, who were involved in the chaos, including Brazilian club president Sergio Coelho, also threw two bottles of water in the direction of Argentina.

Boca Juniors canceled the press conference after the game, saying it would wait for a report prepared by the referees to impose the respective sanctions.

El Minero, one of the best clubs in the Libertadores team stage, will face the winner of the fight between Argentina River Plate and Argentina Juniors in the quarterfinals. (D)
