(CNN) – Finally, comes an emoji that represents us all: a tired face with dark circles.
It's one of eight new emojis that will appear on smartphones and computers next year, including a vegetable, a harp, a leafless tree, a spade, a purple splash and the English Channel's remote island flag. That's SAARC.
Popular emoji reference site Emojipedia released sample images a few months ago. Recently, the Unicode Consortium, a non-profit organization that oversees global emoji standards and new versions, approved the new line.
Smartphone users will be able to use the new emoji “on a variety of digital devices in the coming months and throughout 2025.” According to Emojipedia.
The Exhausted Emoji Face won the title of “Most Anticipated Emoji” at the World Emoji Awards, where it received over 60% of the vote. Splash and Scoop came second and third respectively.
Although these may seem simple, the leafless tree is meant to raise awareness about drought and climate change, according to Brian Byhagi, who contributed to the Unicode Consortium.
“Drought is a natural part of the climate cycle, and over millions of years trees have adapted to these harsh conditions,” Baihagi wrote. “But the climate is changing, droughts are becoming more frequent, more severe and spreading to other places in a shorter period of time.”
Different operating services and companies like Apple's iOS and Alphabet's Android put their own spins on emoji designs.
Explanations lead to controversy, such as Google's mistake of putting foam in a half-full glass of beer or mixing ingredients (with cheese underneath) in its hamburger emoji. Both are fixed.
