The speech of the President of the Republic of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, in New York, received a positive response from Elon Musk, one of the most influential people in the world, who recently met with the Salvadoran President to discuss issues of common interest.
“Excellent speech by President Nayib Bukele!” Musk said.
In his speech, Nayib Bukele stressed that in five years, “the country has been reborn as a free and secure state for its people, leaving behind its violent past to which it does not wish to return.”
He talked about where we came from as a nation, and stated that the country had experienced symptoms of decline and that these stages were now occurring globally. “As Salvadorans, we recognize these symptoms of decline when we see them because we have all been through them. We have lived through one phase of our nation’s downfall after another and we are seeing those same phases again, but this time on a global scale.
The Head of State stressed that in these coming times, El Salvador can be “a small refuge from the approaching storm and maintain hope.”
“We cannot and do not wish to tell other countries what to do. Each country must make its own decisions and do what is best for its people. We can only offer a word of caution from a friend who has gone through a dark time and has had his season of life to emerge from it. We cannot change the course of the world. El Salvador is a very small country, we are actually the smallest country in the entire American continent. This is much bigger than us, in fact bigger than any nation. We cannot prevent the dark times that are coming but what we can do is become a small shelter from the approaching storm and keep hope alive.
Likewise, the president denied that the opposition in El Salvador was being persecuted and that people's opinions were being censored. “In El Salvador, we do not jail dissent, we do not censor opinions, we do not confiscate the property of those who think differently, and we do not arrest people for expressing their ideas. In El Salvador, your freedom of expression and your personal property will always be protected. In El Salvador, we prioritize the safety of our honest citizens over the comfort of criminals. Some say we have imprisoned thousands, but the reality is that we have released millions. Now, good people live free, without fear, with their freedoms and human rights fully respected. He said, which Musk agreed with.
